Introduction to Playa de las Arenas

If you're looking to chill out in the sun, then Playa de las Arenas is for you. This peaceful resort, backed by cliffs that are sure to take your breath away, a spotless sweep of sprawl-on-me sand and some of the best tapas around is what you can expect from Playa de la Arena. The beach is a small, natural beach of black sand and is one of the cleanest on the island - it's even won the European Blue Flag for cleanliness. Why not hire a car, there is ample free parking on the top of the beach with a short footpath down to the sand. You'll never have to venture far when you feel hungry or thirsty, as there are plenty of bars, restaurants and tavernas adjacent to the beach, and a variety of cuisines including a Thai restaurant, a pizzeria, a steak house and a sophisticated restaurant specialising in Austrian cuisine. However if you're missing home comforts of Britain, Cafe Arena is a family-run restaurant which does everything from fish and chips to a Sunday roast. When you feel like doing something a little different, check-out the Wednesday farmer's market at Playa San Juan which sells a wealth of local produce, and the Monday market at Alcala is the place to go for African crafts. As the sun goes down, for a fairly small resort, Playa de la Arena boasts an vast array of bars and restaurants, ranging from the big and bold to a handful of small and intimate venues. Nearby in the resort of Los Gigantes, just one mile north of Playa de la Arena you can hop on a boat trip to spot whales and dolphins. If you don't spot a whale, the sight of the Los Gigantes cliffs are just as impressive.

Journey Times: Airports, Tenerife - 1 hour approx.
