Built around a beautifully preserved old quarter of twisting streets, Santa Cruz's jewel is its magnificent port and city centre, the Plaza de Espana, and the Plaza de la Candelaria, a bustling street, once the site of the San Cristóbal fortress. Wander round the many churches and museums to admire the ornate porticos and interiors, including the church of la Concepción, and the church of San Francisco, one of the most beautiful examples of baroque architecture.

Elsewhere, you'll find masses of souvenir shops, clothes shops and traditional tapas bars and restaurants where you can feast on delicious Canarian delicacies amid stunning Baroque architecture. After a action-packed day of exploring, what's better than tantalizing your tastebuds with vieja sancochada, a tasty fish stew, followed by pastel de cabello de angel, a pumpkin dessert, all washed down with a local rum. Night times needn't be quiet either - if you fancy stepping things up after a leisurely dinner, Santa Cruz's many lively bars and nightclubs will oblige. The city is also home to lush gardens, and all around the port the wide avenues and squares are a perfect stopping off point for a spot of people-watching. Should you feel like exploring slightly further afield, it's worth a visit to San Andrés, a neighbouring seaman's quarter located beside the golden sandy beach of Las Teresitas.

And, if you're lucky to be in Tenerife for Carnival-time, Santa Cruz is famous for its Carnival, one of the most spectacular in Spain. This dazzling all singing and dancing fiesta, which has been declared a international tourist interest, is celebrated by spectacular costumes and a riot of colourful singing and musical performances.
