Introduction to Sagres

Set on Portugal's south-west corner, this sweet little village holds a special place in history and enjoys an awe-inspiring setting amid a jagged, dramatic coastline.

Famed for its headland fortress believed to have been a seamanship school of Henry the Navigator, this unpretentious clutch of whitewashed houses is set around a delightful square lined with friendly cafes and restaurants, many serving fish caught by the local clifftop fishermen. When you're not sitting here, head for the fortress to see the phenomenal sea views and the strange 15th century wind-compass carved in the ground. Another beauty spot is Cabo de Sao Vicente - Europe's most south-westerly point - with its towering cliffs and lighthouse - and to the east, you'll find a string of breathtaking bays and sandy coves perfect for restful days on the sands.
